BBC News School Report

St Mark's News Team

Thank you for taking the time to visit our BBC News School Report Page. Here you will find the students’ reports on the day we spent gathering information or helping people get to grips with the exciting but confusing world of modern computers.

The aim of the day was for the pupils to learn, with guidance from the BBC, what it takes to make and broadcast news stories while also becoming more involved in our local community. To help us make a success of the day, the BBC provided us with a guide, Mr Ben Baker, to introduce us to the two different aspects of the project. Firstly, we were to assist local volunteers over 55 to become more confident using personal computers or to take their ‘first click’ and, secondly, to investigate any changes in the local community as part of updating an 1986 community survey which commemorated the 900th anniversary of the Domesday.

The pupils had a great time planning and then carrying out their different projects. Everyone was enthusiastic, focused and keen to produce the best results. It was only when we got back to base and began downloading our audio and video files did we hit problems. Non-compatible files and machinery, disappearing video clips and an inability to find work across the school network were the main frustrations we encountered but the pupils persevered and managed to produce something, even if in the end our exciting video diaries and other planned outcomes were reduced to static word files. The day was still a great success and the very important lesson of get your media technology working before you start was once again impressed upon us.

We would like to give a huge THANK YOU to all those people who helped us on the day, including the intrepid First Clickers Mrs Jacky Tarrant, Mrs Brenda Young, Miss Pamela McGrath, Flat 22, and Mr David Porter.

A big THANK YOU also goes to the many businesses in Larkhall, Bath, that happily allowed us to invade them and conduct interviews.
Thank you: Larkhall Pharmacy, Larkhall Butchers, Bath Pets, Mercy in Action, Zest Estate Agents, Bath Building Society, the Greengrocers, Langbridge Home Hardware, The Rondo Theatre, Larkhall Garage, and Larkhall MOT Centre.
